What is the                          It is a high quality miniature camera
Geddes Glide Reader?           on a stand which plugs into your
television. It makes anything you put
under the camera look much bigger
                                          on the screen.

Why is it named the              It was designed by Les Geddes to help
the Geddes Glide Reader?       his wife Anne, who had developed Macular
disease. When it is placed over a newspaper
for example, it is easy to slide it down or across
                                           columns of print.

What else can it do?              It can enlarge colour photographs so that they
fill the TV screen. You can read small print,
write a letter, read instructions on food
                                           packaging or medicines, do crosswords
                                           and so much more!

Why has it become                   George Kay, the Chairman of the
so successful?                      Macular Disease Society in Edinburgh, found
out about the Reader, and quickly realised
that it helped a number of people in the Society
read again so he began to publicise the Reader
much more widely. George believes that promoting
the reader among people with partial sight
is one of the most rewarding things he has ever done.

Why does it only cost           George and Les have got together a team of
£65, when other Readers       volunteers who  build the Readers in their own homes.
can cost up to £3,000?         As overheads are very low and nobody in the team
receives any payment, £65 is enough to
buy everything to build a Reader. This makes it a very
                                          affordable visual aid!

How do I obtain                George Kay arranges all the sales and can
a Geddes Reader?             be contacted on 0131 258 6482. If you try a
Reader and find it does not help you, you can
return it to George so that it can be offered to
                                       someone else.
